Traditional Japanese decorative designs are characterized by themes that are found in nature. These designs are not limited to only plants and animals, but also included expressions of natural phenomena which are without specific, set form such as the wind, clouds, thunder, rain, snow, waves, and flowing water. Furthermore, they are far more than mere abstract expressions, having evolved into highly imaginative designs with a unique, sensitive balance between symbolism and form.
The creation process of these designs begins with the ideas and inspirations of the artist first being expressed in the form of drawings and illustrations, and then being refined by the craftsman as he expresses them in physical form, resulting in myriads of combinations of both functionality and form as integral parts of the overall artistic work.
We have inherited an enormous cultural legacy which includes not only countless designs and patterns, but also traditional methods and techniques which comprise a truly unique system of creation. It is the application and development of these traditions in this modern world which we at Yoshiyo Studios have accepted as our mission, an historical challenge we consider to be both our commitment and our responsibility.
Yoshiyo Studios is dedicated to producing artistic works in metal, used primarily for architectural and interior decoration. Although these works are based on traditional Japanese patterns and designs, Yoshiyo Studios is also actively engaged in the continual development of new expressions in metal.
Traditional Japanese patterns and designs have developed in a unique, historical context, and through the introduction of our design concepts and creations we hope that the reader will be able to grasp a deep understanding and appreciation for these traditions and the culture from which they developed.
