Gallery

The partition of the entranceway of a hotel bar and lounge (below). The basis of this design is a traditional pattern of fish scales (above). With extremely limited space, the Japanese have always created partitions which are both decorative and symbolic, creating a visual perspective which effectively divides a room while simultaneously enhancing the perception of available space. One example of this concept is the use of the ‘ranma,’ the openwork screens above the sliding partitions between rooms, and we feel that such traditions can, and should be incorporated into modern architectural design as well.
